Skopelos Churches & Monasteries
Skopelos is full of churches & monasteries. Many of them are
located at Hora (Skopelos Town). So if you walk the small paved alleys
you may see them almost at every turn you take! Some of them are open
during the year, however many of them are not open - only their feast
day.
We will do our best to review all of them! In the meantime you may
check the following ones:
Evangelistria,
Agios
Riginos, Zoodochos
Pigi, Metamorphosis,
Panagia
Livadiotisa, Episkopi,
Agios
Ioannis, Agia
Barbara, Panagia
or Panagitsa.

The Daponte family has founded the
monastery and was built on a smaller
one which used to belong to HatziStephanis' father Ioannis Grammatikos.
He decided to restore the monastery (in 1712) at his own costs, due to
a miracle of Panagia (Virgin Mary) that saved him when he was sent to
the
island's Aga to be put to death. Earlier
according to Kesarios Daponte the monastery was related to
Constantinople, where a holy cross with a portrait of 'Panagia
Pamakaristos' (Virgin Mary) was implanted.
According
to the tradition
it was brought on the island from two monks who came from
Constantinople during the reign of Nikiforos Fokas (963-969).
The temple consisits of four columns with dome and its sculptured
iconostasis is wooden covered with gold constructed
in Constantinople. There is also a small chapel in the monastery and is
dedicated to the
protector of the sailors Saint Nikolaos.
